Using the "C-Word" With My Wife
by breakfast of champions inmonths ago, i commented on another thread about a strategy i was using to introduce my wife to the way cults work--without using the word "cult" and scaring her away.
here's my first comment on that thread:.
i pulled hassan's bite model off the internet and imported it into my word processor.

I can understand how MissFit felt. I may have fallen for that pressure too. But the question I have to start asking myself more and more is: Would this friend do something totally uncormfortable for me if I asked/insisted upon them? If the answer is always a "No" in your own mind, then are they really a friend? To me, being a real friend is a very committed responsibility that I take very seriously. But, as I have gotten older I have realized just how few family and friends I have define friendship and loyalty the way I do.
A friend that is always over-valuing their "theocratic schedule" over everything else is just a Jdub-zombie to me. They have their stupid schedule and YOU must work around it. That may be fine in every day life but when it carries over to important moments in life and they are still spouting off about their "time" or "preparing their Watchtower" when you actually need them for something........ that is very elucidating.

The Present Truth is the Truth and the Old Truth is the Truth, even if they contradict.
by garyneal inthat is the conclusion you must accept if you are a jehovah's witness as my wife tries to explain to me that even if what they are teaching today contradicts what they were previously teaching, they had the truth then and they have the truth now.
the difference is, they (the witnesses and the governing body) simply believed that what they were teaching at the time was the truth but when they discovered new information they adjusted their thinking.
so since they formerly believed it to be the truth, they were in the truth.. an example she gave involved people who once believed the earth was flat.

And the justification by zombie JW's for children getting baptized is "it is a protection from Jehovah". Of course, they cannot actually come up with any reasonable reasons why it is a "protection". They just repeat the mantra.
What baptizing children is really like is handing that child a live grenade that the pin has been pulled. If they never drop the grenade, they have "protection". If they happen to let it slip from their hands or someone knocks it out of their hands........ BOOM! Mangled life.

New explanation of Gog of Magog: Two Gogs?
by leaving_quietly ini just finished watching the recording of the talk at the annual meeting that re-explains gog of magog.
i caught something not previously talked about, that i can recall.. gog of magog is thought to be a coalition of nations that attach god's people during the great tribulation.
this is from ezekiel 38 & 39.. gog and magog in revelation 20 represents those with the same attitude as gog of magog.. thus, the new teaching (maybe not new, but i'll have to research this) is that gog in ezekiel is not the same as gog in revelation 20. two different gogs, happening about a thousand years apart.. .

I think I remember reading somewhere that if a JW elder is going to give the memorial talk then they are *required* to use the WT outline (maybe someone else can confirm this?).
I can remember being at a "worldly person's" memorial. It was held at the deceased person's home in the garden. All of the deceased person's family were JW's. A relative elder gave the talk using the JW outline. Many of the deceased person's "worldly" friends were also in attendance. They sat through the drivel respectfully (albeit bewildered, knowing that the deceased was NOT a believer in anything JW whatsoever). Once the talk was over a particularly close friend of the deceased stood up and invited anyone in attendance to share recollections, stories, or say some words about the deceased. The elder who gave the talk quickly squashed those efforts and clumsily said that the "service was over" and dismissed everyone. I WAS MORTIFIED!!!!!!!!!!
Thankfully, the "worldly friends" that were summarily dismissed immediately broke into song all together (probably 20 of them) and sang "Amazing Grace" right there in the faces of the pompous JWs' as they filed away.
What an embarrassing display of self-righteousness by these JW's.

An Elder said: 'They're in prison for a reason'
by NAVYTOWN inseveral years ago, i was studying the bible (jw literature) with an ms from the local congregation.
i happened to mention that i had several pen pals who were incarcerated in various prisons.
no matter what crimes they committed, i said i saw them as fellow human being who deserved to have a friend to write to.

JW Info-Commercial Memorial Service
by William Penwell ini attended a jw memorial service about 2 years ago and the speaker i thought gave a good eulogy to the diseased even though he quoted a few scriptures.
just recently i attended another jw memorial and the sermon was about 10 minutes on the person and the rest a big info-commercial with a scripture quoted one after the other.
i did not keep count but i would think the speaker read about 10 - 12 scriptures.

The last few memorials I have been to have left me feeling completely empty and angry. There was no celebration of the person (in these cases recently it was people who I truly loved and respected). Just the droning on about the cult.
